Choosing the right area for your Marbella holiday isn’t always straightforward. The names Nueva Andalucía, Puerto Banús, Marbella may be familiar, but what does each neighbourhood offer and what are the differences between them? And, most importantly, which one is the right fit for your trip?

Each has its own ambience, its own character and its own reasons people return year after year. Whether you’re planning a relaxed family break, a few weeks of remote work in the sun, or a well-earned getaway with friends, here’s what you need to know before you decide where to stay.

Marbella Centre: the Old Town, the beach and everything in between

When people think of Marbella, they often imagine the Old Town with its narrow streets, terracotta rooftops and heady scent from the cobbled streets lined with orange trees. That part is very real and it’s just one reason guests choose to stay here. The town blends traditional Andalucian architecture with great restaurants, independent shops and a seafront promenade that stretches for miles.

It’s easy to get around on foot, which makes Marbella ideal if you’re not planning to drive. There are excellent tapas bars, beach cafés, shops and galleries all within walking distance. The beaches tend to be relaxed, with plenty of space even in summer if you know where to go.

Accommodation ranges from compact apartments near the Old Town to larger rentals close to the beach. The Golden Mile nearby is also famous for its opulent apartments and grand villas. For guests who want a bit of everything, whether it be sun, food, culture or a walkable town centre, Marbella is a reliable choice.

Puerto Banús: high-end, high-energy and right on the marina

Ten minutes along the coast, Puerto Banús offers a different kind of experience. Known for its superyachts, designer boutiques and fast cars, it’s a place with energy and a lot of visual drama. That said, there’s more to Puerto Banús than headlines and high fashion.

The marina is lined with restaurants, many of which are family-friendly and open all day. There are long beaches on either side of the port, including several lively beach clubs, and while the central areas are busy in high season, quieter spots are easy to find if you’re staying in a private apartment slightly inland or up in the hills.

Puerto Banús suits guests who enjoy a holiday with energy. It’s not just about nightlife, it’s also the hub for boat charters, water sports and lively entertainment by day and night. If you’re travelling with a group or looking for a bit of glamour with your sea views, Puerto Banús might be your spot.

Nueva Andalucía: peaceful, spacious, close to everything

Set just behind Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía is a residential area with wide, leafy streets, mountain views and a slightly slower pace. It’s a favourite for longer stays, families and anyone who is looking for more space without losing access to the coast.

Golfers know it as the Golf Valley, thanks to courses like Las Brisas, Aloha and Los Naranjos. But it’s not just for golfers. The area is home to stylish villas and low-rise apartment complexes. There’s a good choice of local restaurants, a few small shopping centres. Or if it’s true peace and a natural environment you’re looking for, there are some lovely walks in the hills just moments away.

From Nueva Andalucía, it’s a five-minute drive down to Puerto Banús and fifteen minutes into Marbella. Some properties are within walking distance of Puerto Banús, though a car does give you more flexibility. This is a good option if you value a quiet base and want to explore the wider area during your stay.

What kind of trip are you planning?

To help you decide, it’s worth asking a few questions:

  • Do you want to be able to walk everywhere, or are you happy to drive?
  • Are you looking for peace and privacy, or more energy and varied activities?
  • Are you travelling with children, with friends, or just as a couple?

If you’re after a mix of beach and town, Marbella’s centre is a strong choice. For a scene that’s a bit more high-octane, Puerto Banús delivers. And if you’re planning to stay longer, or want space to spread out, Nueva Andalucía gives you room to breathe and everything within reach.
